Online Advent Retreats and Spiritual Growth Opportunities
"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," or, at least that's the assumption based on that familiar holiday song. But what does that look like at your house? Most of us anticipate the great sales at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving, string lights on the outside of our house, and decorating the inside of our homes. But how exactly are we preparing our hearts for the greatest gift we've ever been given? Through an exploration of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Virgin Birth, and the events surrounding the arrival of Jesus, this Advent study offers an opportunity to experience the joy of the true meaning of Christmas.
Advent can be so busy; we can miss Jesus aamong us. Fr. O'Brien invites you to join him on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. or Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. via ZOOM

Prayer and reflections.
This retreat is designed to bring you closer to Jesus by praying through the Advent gospel readings. Each daily prayer period is structured, using the form of a “Gospel contemplation” that is the hallmark of Ignatian prayer. Regularly praying with Scripture in this way can eventually create a regular rhythm of prayer. One which you may choose to keep using even after the retreat is over. You will need a private space and at least 30 minutes of quiet time every day to pray through the retreat.
This retreat was first given in 2017 so the calendar days are different.
Welcome to An Ignatian Prayer Adventure. This is an adapted version of the Spiritual Exercises. Materials are modified from the longer retreat in The Ignatian Adventure by Kevin O’Brien, SJ.
The eight-week schedule makes it perfectly timed as a Lent and Easter retreat, but the adventure can be started at any time, on your schedule. Join in a flexible experience of daily prayer and reflection. Choose to commit to a regular period of prayer each day, or start with only one day a week. Use as much or as little of the material as helps you in your Ignatian adventure.
The 2018 Advent retreat from Pray as you go and Sacred Space, created to offer you the opportunity to take a step back from the pressing concerns of everyday life, to reflect prayerfully on the current state of your relationships, with God, with the people around you, and with the world in which you live. To help and guide your prayer this Advent, we are focussing on the Prologue of the Gospel of John. This retreat offers you an opportunity to take some time out from the busyness of your life and come to a renewed awareness of the presence of Christ in your life and in His closeness to you. You are invited to deepen your relationship with Him; to welcome Him into your life this Christmas in a new way, and not to be afraid to radiate the light of His love.
There were several questions participants were asked to consider as a guide for them during the Springs of Sanctuary Retreat. “What do I need sanctuary from?” touched my heart.
I shared that I need sanctuary from the endless flood of thoughts that preoccupy my mind; thoughts that hold me back and keep me from being truly free. I need sanctuary from the constant rerun of conversations and/or situations that have led to hurt feelings and a sense of rejection. I need sanctuary from the relentless inner conversations that distract me from living fully and hold me a prisoner in the role of victim.
When I have strong feelings or attachments, compulsive mental role-playing commences. I replay conversations—what was said, what I could have or should have said, what he/she meant, and on and on. Once I can slow down my thoughts, create some space, and breathe, I can hear more clearly what God intends for me to know.
Being clear about what I need to detach from—my thoughts—was the creative fuel I needed to intuitively make my first card named “Sanctuary.”
This Advent, join Loyola Press for a special online Advent experience. Following a traditional Advent calendar format, the experience invites you to slow down this season and discover the quiet moments of Advent hope.
