Sacrament of Initiation

Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word." (CCC:1213)

Baptism of children 7+ and Adults

The Church prepares older children (7+) and adults for all three sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). Those children who have never been baptized will participate in the OCIA process adapted for children and celebrate their sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

"Since children who have reached the use of reason are considered for purposes of Christian Initiation, to be adults (canon 852:1), their formation should follow the general pattern of the ordinary catechumenate as far as possible, with the appropriate adaptations permitted by the ritual. They should receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, together with older catechumens." Order of Christian Initiation of Adults.

OCIA is a special journey for children ages, ages 7 and up, and adults which brings them into full communion with Jesus.

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process for adults who desire to join the Catholic faith and for those seeking more information on the Catholic Church. OCIA can also be a method for Catholics to complete their reception of the initiation sacraments. The manual used in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults states that the rite is designed for adults “who after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God.” The manual also states when speaking about those in the process “By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time receive the sacraments fruitfully.”

GENERAL INFORMATION

Baptism is a sacrament which effectively signifies and ritualizes one’s initiation into the community called Church and manifests God’s love (grace) for his people. Through God’s unconditional love, the effect of original sin is reconciled and the newly baptized Christian is guided and strengthened in his/her promise of fidelity to Jesus Christ. The symbolic use of oil is an essential sign of the sealing and strengthening of this promise. The use of water is an essential symbol of the purification and new life in Christ which is effected at Baptism.

    PARENTS: "We do."

(To the godparents) "Are you ready to help the parents of these children in their duty?"

    GODPARENTS: "We are"

"Dear children, the Church of God receives you with great joy. In her name I sign you with the Sign of the Cross of Christ our Savior; then, after me, your parents and godparents will do the same."
