Considering Cremation

Peace in Christ Niche

Every member of our Catholic Community should have the opportunity to be at rest in a Catholic Cemetery. Placement in our Peace of Christ Niche is available for families of modest means. For information, please contact the parish office.

Kingdom of Heaven Niche

Kingdom of Heaven is our Ministry to the unborn children. The book of Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you", therefore we believe that life begins at conception. All aborted, miscarried and stillborn babies are God's gift and deserve a sacred burial. Our ministry offers families who have lost a child during their pregnancy, or soon thereafter, a consecrated space to bury their child and bring peace to their hearts. The ministry provides a modest Catholic Christian burial at no-charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I would like information on the Columbarium. Who do I contact?

You can request information through the website, saintmcc.com or call the church office, 863-324-3040.  A staff member will contact you to make an appointment to go over any questions you may have or any information you may want

  • What is a Columbarium? Niche? Urn?

A Columbarium is a structure that houses cremated remains. The cremated remains are placed in a reserved space in the Columbarium called a niche. The container that holds the cremated remains in a niche is called an urn.  When you make a purchase in the Columbarium, you are purchasing placement rights (reservation) in a niche for cremated remains. St. Matthew Catholic Church Columbarium includes niches in an octagon-shaped structure with the large crucifix in the center, surrounded by four separate structures (units) which also include niches.

  • Can I purchase a niche in the Columbarium anytime?

Yes. Purchase of a niche reservation in the Columbarium can be made by an individual before death.  Purchasing placement rights in a niche is the best way of ensuring that your wishes are honored when you die. Purchase of a niche can also be made by the family of the deceased following death.

  • Is there availability in the Columbarium?

Yes, there is availability in the octagon.  Niches in the 4 units around the octagon are full. You may notice many niches are not engraved.  This does not mean the units are available for sale.  Previously,  units were engraved at the time of purchase but this practice is no longer taking place.  During your appointment, a staff member will inform you know what niches are available for purchase.   Niches can be purchased for one person, a single niche, or for two persons, a double niche.

  • What is included in the niche price?

The price of the niche includes the reservation of a location for placement of cremated remains.  The price does not include the urn or the engraving of the name, year of birth and year of death of the deceased person in the granite slab covering the niche.

  • How can I pay for the purchase of a niche?

Purchase of a niche can be payed by check, credit card or cash. Niche purchase on installment for up to 12 months with a deposit is also available.

  • Do I have to purchase the urn and engraving at the time of niche purchase?

The urn and engraving of the granite slab does not need to be purchased at the same time the niche is purchased.  You may if you want to or you may buy it at anytime in the future.  Call the office to set up an appointment.  Purchase will be required at the time of need, when a death takes place. The purchase of urn and engraving is not available for installment purchase. Due to th fact that the space in the niche is very tight, St. Matthew Columbarium has urns for sale that fit in the niche, although you can purchase the urn from a funeral home or vendor of your choice. Please call the office if you would like to get the measurements of the urn to purchase on your own.

  • If I purchase the urn from St. Matthew, how does the urn get to the funeral home?

Once a person dies, the name of the deceased, date of birth, date of death and niche number will be inscribed on the bottom of the urn.  Afterwards, the family and the funeral home will be notified and arrangements can be made for pickup of the urn by either one.

  • My spouse and I have purchased a double niche. What do I need to do if my spouse dies?

Notify the church office of the death of your spouse.  You will need to purchase an urn and engraving(of slab) if you have not already done so.  Pick up of the urn by a family member or the funeral home from the church office will need to be arranged. The funeral home or crematory will place the cremated remains in the urn and seal it. During this time, plans can be made with the Bereavement Ministry of St. Matthew for a funeral mass for the deceased.

  • What paper work will you need from the deceased's family?

For the inurnment, a copy of the death certificate and cremation certificate is required to place in the inurnment file.

  • How does the urn get to church for the funeral Mass and inurnment?

Usually family members bring the urn to church the day of the funeral mass.  The family can also make arrangement with the funeral home to deliver the urn to church the day of the funeral mass.  In this case, the funeral home representative will need to remain on church property until a member of the family has arrived on church grounds.

  • When does the inurnment take place?

The inurnment will usually take place after the funeral mass on a weekday morning.  The funeral mass does not need to take place at St. Matthew.  The funeral mass can take place in any Catholic Church, then an inurnment service will need to be scheduled with the pastor of St. Matthew for inurnment in the Columbarium.  Under normal circumstances, any person that is to be inurned in the Columbarium is to have a funeral Mass.  Due to the coronavirus, the family of the deceased is given the choice of a funeral mass with inurnment or an inurnment service only.  Please be aware the funeral mass has been simplified to accommodate the safety requirements due to the coronavirus.

  • My spouse is not Catholic. Can my spouse be inurned in the Columbarium?

Yes.  Your spouse can be inurned in the Columbarium as long as the person agreed to having a Catholic Inurnment service.

  • What is an in-ground niche?

An in-ground niche is a chamber placed in the ground that stores urns with cremated remains.  The chamber is made of thick, strong polyethylene.  It is inert to degradation and deterioration.  It will last forever.  Dirt and humidity will not damage it.  The chamber is covered by a lid made of granite and secured.

  • Where are the in-ground niches being placed in the Columbarium?

The in-ground niches are being placed along the walkway of the Stations of the Cross in the Columbarium Gardens.

  • How many urns does the chamber hold?

Currently there are 2 sizes of chambers available.  The smaller chamber will hold up to 6 urns. (The urns that are the size used for the above-ground niches at St. Matthew. ) The larger chamber, which requires a deeper hole in the ground, will hold up to 10 urns.  Any  size or shape urn can be placed in the niche.    The size of the urns will determine how many urns will actually fit in the chamber.  Both chambers can be used for one or multiple urns.

  • If I am interested in in-ground niches, what decisions do I have to make at the time of purchase?

First, you would need to make the selection of the location.  The niches are placed across from the Stations of the Cross, so you would need to select the station.  You will also need to select the size of chamber (smaller or larger) and the granite lid color from the available granite list.

  • When does the engraving take place?

Since the in-ground niches are purchased by one purchaser, engraving can take place anytime after purchase. It is at the discretion of the purchaser.

  • Is the engraving only for the first and last name, year of birth and year of death as in the above-ground niches in the columbarium?

No.  With the in-ground niches there are more possible variations in engraving.  The granite lid is 21” by 21” so there is space where you may want to include a phrase  (ex.  In Loving Memory) or an emblem (ex. praying hands, rosary) along with the names of the deceased.  You will need to take into account how many urns will be in the chamber to assure spacing for name engravings.  You will also decide how to list the names, and whether you want the full date or only year of birth/death to be included in the engraving.  This process will not be immediate.  The office will make your requests known to the engraver.  The engraver will send back a proof for you to approve.  No engraving will be done without the purchaser’s approval. Once the office receives written approval for the engraving, and payment is made for the engraving, the office will send the information to the engraver.

  • How will the inurnment take place?

The inurnment will take place usually after the funeral mass in the morning.  The granite lid will be removed ahead of time by the maintenance department.  The chamber will be exposed in the ground.  After a short service, a family member will place the urn in the chamber.  If a family member is not able to place the urn in the chamber,  the presider or a member of the Consolation team will place the urn in the niche and the granite cover will be put back and secured. If the funeral mass has taken place at another church, the service can be scheduled at another time during the day.

  • If I decide, at future date, that I want to remove an urn from the in-ground niche, is it possible?

Yes, the in-ground niches can be opened and an urn can be removed.  This will only happen after appropriate paperwork is completed accompanied by an administrative fee.   If the lid has been engraved there will be no refund on the niche.  If the niche has not been engraved 75%  of the cost of the niche will be refunded.

  • Who do I need to contact to discuss a purchase in the columbarium?

Call the church office at 863-324-3040 .  Someone will get back to you in a timely manner.  You can also make a request online through our website, saintmcc.com.
