Saint Teresa of Calcutta, known as Mother Teresa, was a Catholic nun and missionary who dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor in the slums of Kolkata, India. She was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia.
Mother Teresa felt a calling from God at a young age and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns, at the age of 18. After teaching at a school in Kolkata for almost two decades, she received a second calling to work among the poorest and most marginalized people in society.
In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation that focused on serving the sick, the hungry, the dying, and the homeless. The Missionaries of Charity eventually grew into a global organization with missions in over 130 countries.
Mother Teresa received numerous awards and honors for her humanitarian work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was known for her humility, compassion, and selflessness, and she inspired millions of people around the world with her dedication to serving the poor and marginalized.
Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, and was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church on September 4, 2016. She is now known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta and is venerated as the patron saint of Kolkata, the Missionaries of Charity, and World Youth Day.
